Principal's Message 3/24/17

Dear Canyon View Families,

As of this morning, 321 students out of 400 are registered for the 2017-2018 school year. We are asking families to register the remaining students we expect at Canyon View for next school year as soon as possible.  As a reminder, our staffing numbers are directly impacted by student enrollment numbers.
The online registration process is more efficient than in the past and can be completed by visiting the Canyon View website and clicking on the Register for School link.  If you need assistance, please contact our office staff at 209-7701.  A special thank you is extended to those families who have completed or will complete the process over the next few days. We appreciate your efforts!

Standardized Testing:

On Thursday, April 7 the standardized testing period will begin. Grade 4 will take the AIMS Science test using paper and pencil. Grades 3-5 will take the AZ MERIT tests in the areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This is a computer-based test. Students may bring their own ear buds for the AzMERIT testing. We will provide headphones, but some students may prefer to bring their own for testing. Headphones/ear buds are needed for the AzMERIT Reading, parts 1 and 2 tests. You may learn more about the AzMERIT by visiting the Arizona Department of Education’s website: : http://azmeritportal.org/sample-tests/.  Please review the schedule below and use it as a reference during our testing weeks.  Also please ensure that your student(s) are at school on time as once each testing session has begun they will not be allowed to enter class until the testing session is complete.  Make-up testing will begin at a later date.

Parents often ask how they might assist their children in preparing for the tests.  Here’s what you can do:
  • Ensure that your child is on time each day.  This is critical!
  • Make every effort to have your child attend classes regularly.  Avoid absences.
  • Ensure that your child has adequate sleep and a nutritious breakfast
  • Plan appointments and other disruptions to the school day for another time
    • Classes will not be interrupted during testing times
  • Discuss the tests with your child and encourage individual best effort
Visit the website for AIMS student guides and sample tests: http://azmeritportal.org/sample-tests/.

Finally, below are just a few images that capture the variety of learning experiences our students have been engaged in over the past two weeks.  The entire staff at Canyon View Elementary is deeply committed to the whole-child approach to educating our students, and we are routinely researching and exploring new ways to refine and improve our practice.

CV FFO

Are you interested in taking a leadership role with the Canyon View FFO? Can you help the school in a smaller role? We are looking for a secretary for 2017-18. The secretary keeps minutes at FFO meetings and votes on grant requests as part of the executive board. We also need a coordinator for the Buddy Program for summer 2017.
Some other open positions for the 2017-18 school year include Box Tops chairperson, Canyon Boo chair/committee, and volunteer coordinator. In 2018, a book fair chairperson will be needed for the Spring book fair and a treasurer-in-training will want to shadow our current FFO treasurer.
If you have any questions or would like to find out more about these or other positions, please join us at the April CVFFO General Meeting on Friday, April 14 at 8:15 a.m. Or you may email questions to President@canyonviewffo.org

Principal's Message 3/3/17

Dear Canyon View Families,

I hope everyone had a nice Rodeo Break and that you were able to spend some time with family and friends.  This Monday, parents will be able to view their child’s report card by logging into their ParentVUE account and clicking the Report Card section along the left side of your child’s homepage.  There are tutorials found on our school website for your convenience to help you better understand your ParentVUE account http://cves.cfsd16.org/.  Parents must have an active ParentVUE account in order to view/print their child’s report card.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s report card or need assistance with ParentVUE, please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

As of this morning, 176 students out of 400 are registered for the 2017-2018 school year. We are asking families to register the remaining students we expect at Canyon View for next school year as soon as possible. Each year the number of teachers assigned to Canyon View is determined by the number of students registered at each grade level. This includes the assignment of classroom teachers as well as teachers who teach Robotics, Art, Music, PE, and World Languages. It is important to have accurate information early in the year so that the lowest student-to-teacher ratio is identified.

On March 17, we will be holding our spring conferences and we will be on a half-day schedule. Morning Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 9:30AM. Students in Kindergarten Plus and grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 11:30AM. We will not serve lunch on March 11.

Spring Break is quickly approaching (4/3-4/7), and when we return we will begin the standardized testing for grades 3-5. The testing dates are published below.  Please help us support your child’s success by ensuring a healthy night’s sleep and arrival to school on time.  Students should be in their classroom at 8:00 AM.

Grade 4 will take the AIMS Science test using paper and pencil. Grades 3-5 will take the AzMERIT tests in the areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This is a computer-based test.
