SPRING BREAK
SCHOOL CLOSED  3/30-4/3

Preparing your Student for AzMERIT Test

As a Canyon View community, we all are interested in the roll out of the Arizona Department of Education's AzMERIT test that will begin for Canyon View students on April 10, 2015.

If you are interested in reviewing the published sample test with your student, you may visit the following website: http://azmeritportal.org/.

Clicking on the button titled, "Sample Tests" will guide you to the sample test questions that are available to the general public.

Because this is a computer-based test, headphones will be provided to students. Students are invited to bring their own personal headphones if they wish. If you have any further questions, please contact the front office at (520) 209-7701.

Standardized Testing:

On Thursday, April 9 the standardized testing period will begin. This year, the AIMS Science assessment will be administered to fourth grade students (paper and pencil) during the first day of testing followed by the third, fourth and fifth grade AzMERIT assessments (computer-based).  Students may bring their own ear buds for the AzMERIT assessment.  We will provide headphones, but some students may prefer to bring their own for testing.  Headphones/earbuds are needed for the AzMERIT Reading, parts 1 and 2 tests.  Please review the schedule below and use it as a reference during our testing weeks.  Also please ensure that your student(s) are at school on time as once each testing session has begun they will not be allowed to enter class until the testing session is complete.  Make-up testing will begin at a later date.

AIMS Science, 4th Grade:
Thursday, April 9:

AzMERIT, 3rd, 4th and 5th:
Friday, April 10:                Writing
Tuesday, April 14:             Reading-Part 1 and Math-Part 1
Wednesday, April 15:        Reading-Part 2 and Math-Part 2

Parents often ask how they might assist their children in preparing for the tests.  Here’s what you can do:
Ensure that your child is on time each day.  This is critical!
Make every effort to have your child attend classes regularly.  Avoid absences.
Ensure that your child has adequate sleep and a nutritious breakfast
Plan appointments and other disruptions to the school day for another time
Classes will not be interrupted during testing times
Discuss the tests with your child and encourage individual best effort

The CFSD Foundation is participating in Arizona Gives Day on April 7. This statewide, 24-hour, online giving campaign is an exciting way for you and your family to donate to an organization that supports our excellent teachers.  Big or small, your donation can make an impact. We, along with the Foundation, will be sending out more information and instructions the day of this important campaign!

Yesterday, Canyon View’s Site Council held our Problem Solving Family Night and it was a huge success!  Students and families alike participated in a variety of problem solving activities that challenged participants’ critical and creative thinking skills in a community-based atmosphere.  Please be sure to check out our Twitter feed found on the Canyon View website for photos from our family event ( HYPERLINK "https://twitter.com/CanyonView1" https://twitter.com/CanyonView1).

I hope everyone has a fantastic Spring break next week!

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

I hope everyone had a nice Rodeo Break and that you were able to spend some time with family and friends.  Last Friday, report cards were sent home with your child.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress or the information contained in the report please contact your child’s teacher and they will be happy to review the information with you.

Next, the CFSD Foundation is participating in Arizona Gives Day on April 7. This statewide, 24-hour, online giving campaign is an exciting way for you and your family to donate to an organization that supports our excellent teachers.  Big or small, your donation can make an impact. We, along with the Foundation, will be sending out more information and instructions the day of this important campaign!

Finally, as you are aware each CFSD elementary school has been involved in a district-wide implementation of robotics instruction.  Students in grades 2-5 have been highly engaged in authentic deep learning experiences that incorporate the use of LEGO Robotic technology.  This endeavor has certainly challenged our students to develop and strengthen a wide variety of important skills that will carry over to other areas of their lives, and the benefits of this experience have certainly been worth the investment:

  • Encourages interest in STEM subjects and careers - students apply math, science, ELA standards and make connections across the curriculum
  •  Supplements and extends content area instruction
  • Teaches essential 21st Century skills - collaboration, problem-solving, project management, self-direction and persistence
  • Gives students solid understanding of how technology works
  • Motivates students to work hard and see work as fun

Below are the units of study for each grade level.  Please take a few minutes to review the unit summaries and have a conversation with your 2-5 grader(s) about their experiences during their time in robotics.

Grade 2: Smart Bots
Second grade students create and debug 2-4 step NXT programs using wheel rotations to measure distances and engineer simple arms to retrieve and deliver items.

Grade 3: Service Bots
Third grade students create and debug NXT light and touch sensor programs to respond to different conditions and engineer passive and active arms to accomplish serving tasks.

Grade 4: Speed Bots
Students create and debug EV3 programs using a variety of move and sensor commands to respond to change and navigate obstacles.

Grade 5: Sport Bots
Students explore gear systems to engineer arms and create and debug EV3 programs to kick, putt and throw a ball and activate ball machines.

Mrs. Ackerman has invested a tremendous amount of time, energy, and passion to ensure the success of this program, and we are sincerely honored to have her teaching our students, and staff, about how robotics can impact a child’s life for years to come!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman
