Link to Parent-Teacher Conference Survey

Dear Canyon View Families, Conference week is behind us and I hope that your conversations with your children’s teachers were informative. Conference week is a valuable time for us each year as it is a way to coordinate our collective efforts to help educate our children and support the work that is taking place at school and at home. As we all can agree, learning doesn’t stop when our children leave school, and we cannot express enough how thankful we are for your unwavering commitment to our children’s education. In an effort to ensure that parent-teacher conferences are meeting the needs of everyone involved, we are asking parents to give us some feedback by completing a short survey. Please use the link below to complete the survey. If you have multiple children who attend Canyon View, we would appreciate it if you completed a separate survey for each child. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NYN97KM

Open Enrollment Bus Ridership Information

Dear Open Enrollment Parent/Guardian:

Last school year, applications were accepted from open enrollment families wishing to obtain bus service. Permission was granted based on capacity at that time and the accommodation was made for that school year only, noting to families that it may not be available in future school years.

As we enter the new school year, we are in the process of assessing our in-district ridership to determine the capacity for Open Enrollment riders again. As an open enrollment family, transportation of your student is your responsibility and will continue to be your responsibility until you have applied for and have been accepted for ridership during the 2012-2013 school year.

If you would like to request that your student ride an existing bus during the 2012-2013 school year, an application will be available on the district website beginning September 4, 2012. The website address is www.cfsd16.org. Click on Parent Info, then Transportation. All requests received by September 10th will be given equal consideration. If the capacity of our buses is insufficient to accommodate all the students, then a random selection process will be used to accept riders. Applications submitted after September 10th will be considered on a first come, first serve basis.

The application requires you to determine the bus number and bus stop you would like to access.  Bus schedules will be available at the beginning of August on the district website: www.cfsd16.org.  Click on Parent Info, then Transportation.

Please note that if the requested information on the application is not complete, the request will not be considered.

Welcome Back!

Principal's Corner

Dear Students and Families,

The summer break has flown by and here we are at the beginning of the 2012--2013 school year. The last few weeks have been spent preparing for this coming year. New students are enrolling, staff members have been hired, schedules have been created and materials and supplies ordered. I want to personally thank all who wrote such nice welcome letters to me. I read each and every letter, and I look forward to starting my first year as Principal at Canyon View Elementary and working with you and your children.

As in the past, we will continue developing better ways to guarantee that we are preparing our students to be successful in the 21st Century. Our goal is for them to be able to meet the challenges of an uncertain future, to be prepared for careers that most likely do not even exist now. Thank you for your continued support in this endeavor.

There has been an increase in the price of school lunches this year. K--5 lunches are now $3.00. Don’t forget to use www.mylunchmoney.com to make pre--payments to your child’s school meal account. They take Visa, MasterCard, and Discover cards.

Members of your FFO have been busy getting ready for another fabulous school year. They would like everyone to be reminded to stay informed by reading our electronic newsletter, Canyon Views. It is the best way to keep up to date with all that is happening at Canyon View. The first edition will be sent out August 17. If you would prefer to receive a hard copy of the bi--weekly publication, please contact Beth Klingensmith at 209--7702.

Lastly, every family is encouraged to participate in our Direct Giving Campaign. By giving to our FFO directly we can avoid the need to sell gift wrap, cookie dough, etc. and greatly reduce the number of additional fundraisers that are necessary to fund the various curriculum--supporting programs for our students. The Direct Giving Campaign kicks off the first week of school and will conclude at the beginning of November. Donation forms can be found in this informational packet and also on Canyon View’s website http://www.cfsd16.org/schools/canyonview/ under the FFO link. Remember, every student and every teacher benefits from this support! With your help, our FFO helps make this school successful.

Please take the time to read the remainder of this letter. It contains a variety of information that should prove helpful in getting the new school year off to a smooth start.
This year the first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 9th. Our school hours are 8:00 am to 3:00 pm (Monday dismissal is 1:30 pm).

On Wednesday, Aug. 8th we will have our open houses on campus. Due to the number of new families we will have again this year, we have separated the open house times into new students and returning students time slots. The open house for new families is from 1:00--2:00 and returning families will come from 2:30--3:30. This will allow us to give our undivided attention to the needs of new families to welcome them and get them settled into their new school. It will also allow parents and students to see their classrooms and meet their teachers. These first impressions are very important to us at Canyon View, and we know how important they are in developing good working relationships with our students and families.
During our Open Houses, we will have all bus schedules posted in the front office window for parents and students to view. Bus schedules will also be available on the CFSD website (www.cfsd16.org) under the Parent Info tab. Also, a representative from Community Schools will be on campus registering students and answering any questions that parents may have. Finally, the FFO will be hosting an ice cream social in the MPR beginning at 1:00 pm. After meeting with your teacher(s), students and parents are encouraged to stop by and meet our committed group of volunteers.

Please mark your calendars now for the following back to school activities:

Aug. 8 Back to School Open House/Ice Cream Social
New Families 1:00--2:00 pm
Returning Families 2:30--3:30 pm
Aug. 9 First Day of School
Aug. 15 5th Grade Beginning Band Meeting 6:30 pm (CFHS Auditorium)

We are looking forward to another great year. Remember, school starts on Thursday, Aug. 9th at 8:00 am. If your student is going to miss the first day or two of school, please notify the office (209--7700) so we don’t delete the student from our rolls.

Again, welcome to the beginning of what is sure to be a very exciting and rewarding school year.

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman
Principal
