Principal's Message 10/23

Dear Canyon View Families,

Conference week is behind us and I hope that your conversations with your children’s teachers were informative.  Conference week is a valuable time for us each year as it is a way to coordinate our collective efforts to help educate our children and support the work that is taking place at school and at home.  As we all can agree, learning doesn’t stop when our children leave school, and we are committed to strengthening the school-home partnership.

In an effort to ensure that parent-teacher conferences are meeting the needs of everyone involved, we will be asking our parents to give us their feedback by completing a short survey.  As in years past, the information collected will be analyzed and used to improve our future parent-teacher conferences.  This survey will be sent out next week, and we would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to share your thoughts.  Please be on the lookout for the survey email.

Over the next two weeks, we have several exciting events happening around campus beginning with our Science Fair Kick-off Night on Wednesday, October 28 from 6-7 p.m. in the MPR.  This informational session will give students and parents insight regarding the scientific process and what it takes to create a quality science fair project.  Students who participate in this project-based learning opportunity will experience first-hand the excitement and sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a science experiment from start to finish, regardless of the end result.  Project-based learning is an effective way to spark students’ natural sense of curiosity, and the impact could last a lifetime!

Next, on Friday, October 30th we will be having our annual Halloween Parade out on the North Field.  We will be starting the festivities promptly after morning announcements and students who are planning on dressing up should arrive at school dressed in their costumes.   When selecting a costume for your child/children, please be sure that it is appropriate for school.  Children are not permitted to wear face paint, bring dangerous items, or items that represent weapons or could be used in a way that could cause injury to other participants.  After our parade has concluded, all students will be expected to change back into their regular school attire.  We appreciate your support!

Friday, October 30th is also Canyon Boo!  This long-standing tradition kicks off at 6:00 p.m. and includes several fun and engaging activities ranging from trick-or-treating (6-8 p.m.), the Canyon View Book Fair and Mad Science.  You do not want to miss this community-building event and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Finally, on Saturday, November 7th Canyon View will be hosting a Veteran’s Walk at Sabino Canyon from 7-8:30 a.m.  This walk is to recognize and honor service members for their sacrifices to our country.  Please come out with your favorite uniformed family member or friend for this 1.9 mile walk.  Flags will be given to the first 100 children.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman
Principal

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

Parent-teacher conferences are coming up next week.  We will be on a half-day schedule from Monday, October 12th through Wednesday, October 14th.  Kindergarten Plus through 5th grade will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. while regular Kindergarten will be dismissed at 9:30 a.m.  Lunch will not be served during these three days.   There will be no school on October 15-16 due to Fall Break.

Our teachers view conference week as an important time of the year to help strengthen the home-school partnership that is needed to support our students’ academic, social and emotional needs.  These conferences are designed to promote two-way communication between school and home in order to optimize each student’s educational experience.  We are looking forward to having you on campus to discuss your child’s progress.

Today, our school practiced one of our scheduled lockdown drills.  Ensuring a safe learning environment is our top priority, and these drills are intended to help prepare our staff and students in the event of an emergency situation.  As with all of our emergency drills, we will collect and analyze procedural information, and we will use this important information to ensure that our Emergency Response Plan is implemented effectively and efficiently.

Finally, this morning we held our first Spirit Assembly in the MPR.  These school-wide assemblies are a fun and rewarding experience for our students and staff. The entire Canyon View staff understands the importance of recognizing and celebrating our students’ achievements, and our Spirit Assemblies are the perfect venue to do so.  During today’s assembly, we enjoyed a performance from our 4th/5th grade choir, we celebrated our students who are attending Imagine Learning and Khan Academy before and after school, promoted our school-wide goal of developing a growth mindset, and we recognized several individual students, and a homeroom class, who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating the Six Pillars of Character.  We would love to see as many of our parents as possible attend our next Spirit Assembly on Friday, December 18.  If you can make it, we promise it will be worth your time!

Have a wonderful and safe Fall Break!

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman
