Prinipal's Message

November 20, 2015

Dear Canyon View Families,

For many, the holiday season conjures up memories of joyous family gatherings, favorite foods and wonderful gifts. This time of year also reminds us how fortunate we are to have all of the basic needs provided for us without a second thought.  Unfortunately, not all families are lucky to have these cheerful remembrances and needs met.  Under the leadership of Canyon View’s Student Advisory Board, the staff and students at Canyon View Elementary will be participating in a school-wide Adopt-A-Family Project, and we would like to share with families the idea of making wonderful holiday memories.

Through a local community partnership, each Canyon View classroom will be assigned to a family in need of assistance.  Classes will take part in what we hope will make the holiday season a memorable time for the children and parents.  If there are families within our own school community that are in need of assistance, we encourage them to please contact our school counselor, Mrs. Stevens at 209-7705 or by email: kstevens@cfsd16.org.  All information would be confidential and handled with the upmost respect for privacy.

The Adopt-A-Family Project will run from
November 20 through December 15.  In the coming days, a wish list from our adopted families will be sent outlining gift items as well as basic household items that are needed. We are asking for your generous support. Your involvement can make a significant difference in helping us bring some holiday cheer to these families.  Each teacher will email their classroom parents the itemized list of gifts and essentials that are being requested.  Canyon View families are encouraged to sign-up for an item or two and bring the purchased item(s) to their child’s classroom. Each classroom will have a collection box to store the gifts during the length of the project. The sign-up process will ensure that we do not receive repeats of the same items.

On
Tuesday, December 15 each grade level will bring their box of donations to awaiting delivery trucks that will transport the goods to the families in need.  These grateful parents will then be able to wrap the gifts for their children just in time for the holiday.

At Canyon View, we are committed to teaching our students the meaning and value of the Six Pillars of Character, and the Adopt-A-Family Project is a great way to instill these important traits in our children.

Thank you for supporting this special project.

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman

Arizona Tax Credit Information

Arizona Tax Credit in the Foothills

The Catalina Foothills School District is a wonderful school community! It is impressive to see a community with such a commitment to educational excellence and support of the schools here in the Foothills.  CFSD would not be the district it is today without the community that surrounds and supports it! The success of our schools' extracurricular programs is tied to the generous contributions of community members who divert some of their state tax funds to the CFSD programs of their choice!

How does it Work?
Any Arizona taxpayer has the opportunity to give to Catalina Foothills School District instead of paying it in taxes. The donation must be earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based, extracurricular activities. We'll send the donor a receipt for their records. Then, when the taxpayer fills out their 2015 Arizona state taxes, they can subtract the amount of the donation, up to $400 (joint filers) and $200 (individuals), from what is owed in state taxes.  This is not just a tax deduction…it is a tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed to the state, dollar-for-dollar.  For more information about how this credit will work for your individual tax situation, contact your tax advisor.

How are these Dollars Spent?
Tax Credit dollars are spent to support fee-based, extra-curricular offerings. However, regular communication between Mr. Henikman and Community Schools, leads to a beneficial partnerships that also helps support the needs at Canyon View, as dollars are spent to serve a joint purpose.

What is the Tax Credit Goal at Canyon View?
We are aiming for $30,000…that is only 150 individuals at $200 each!

Where Can I Donate?
You can donate online (http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx) with your credit card or fill out the 2015 Tax Credit Form, which can be mailed to Murphey Administration Center, 2101 E River Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85718 or dropped off in person at any CFSD school, by December 31, 2015. Please make checks payable to Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) and note the program to which you'd like to contribute on the check.

What have we purchased at Canyon View with tax credit dollars?

Here are some of the joint projects that Community Schools and past Canyon View principals have completed/purchased within the last 5 years, as well as projects underway or yet to come with Mr. Henikman:

·      STEAM Club supplies

Principal's Message 11/06

                                            PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Canyon View Families,

October was a very exciting month for us at Canyon View and now it’s on to the second trimester!  We want to thank everyone for attending our annual Canyon Boo celebration and making this special event such an enjoyable experience for our children.  The costume parade on the 30th was another fun event for our students, and it was rewarding to see all of the teachers and parents having just as much fun as our children!  We also want to thank all of our students and parents for supporting this week’s Book Fair.  Students’ excitement for reading was contagious around campus, and we want to thank all of our committed volunteers who helped out!

On Friday, November 13th, parents will be able to view their child’s report card by logging into their ParentVUE account and clicking the Report Card section along the left side of your child’s homepage.  There are tutorials on   "https://www.youtube.com/user/CVElementary/playlists" Canyon View's Youtube Channel for your convenience to help you better understand your ParentVUE account.  If you have not activated your ParentVUE account, or do not have the activation code that was given out during our Curriculum Night in August, please contact the front office.  Parents must have an active ParentVUE account in order to view/print their child’s report card.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s report card or need assistance with ParentVUE, please do not hesitate to contact the front office.

Also on Friday, November 13th, our fourth and fifth grade students will bring home AzMERIT results from the Spring 2015 testing sessions.  Students will have scores for both Math and English Language Arts (ELA).  One of four performance levels will be noted on the student’s report for Math and English Language Arts, which include Highly Proficient, Proficient, Partially Proficient and Minimally Proficient. The English Language Arts score is composed of three performance areas: Reading for Information, Reading for Literature, and Writing and Language.  The Mathematics score is a combination of three performance areas: Operations, Algebraic Thinking, Numbers in Base Ten, and Measurement, Data and Geometry.  You may access information about AzMERIT on the Arizona Department of Education website at   "http://www.azed.gov/assessment/azmerit/" http://www.azed.gov/assessment/azmerit/.  If you would like to discuss your student’s results, please contact your child’s teacher or me.  We want to support your family as this new assessment and the results are distributed to you and the public.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that under the leadership of our Student Advisory Board (SAB), Canyon View will once again participate in the Adopt-A-Family Project.  Last year, our school community positively influenced the lives of over 150 people during the holiday season.  We are deeply committed to this project, and we are looking forward to helping those in need.  Additional information will be sent out to our families in two weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend!
