Adopt-A-Family

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

With 2016 quickly approaching, we want to congratulate all of our students for the effort they have put into becoming life-long learners this semester.  We also want to thank all of our parents and families for your unwavering commitment to making Canyon View Elementary an enriching place for children.  The first semester has been filled with exciting and engaging units of study, and countless memories have been formed along the way.  The skills and knowledge that students are acquiring, and the relationships that students are forming with their teachers and fellow classmates will last a lifetime, and the best is yet to come!

We want to thank all of our CV families for supporting our Adopt-A-Family Project.  Under the leadership of our Student Advisory Board (SAB), we were able to support 18 Tucson families who are in need.  This student-led project was a meaningful way to teach the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship) to our students, and we hope that they see the value in taking on these types of special projects.  With the support from our school community, our collective efforts have made a lasting impact on these families during the holiday season and we could not have done it without all of you.  Thank you!

This past Tuesday, we held our annual Canyon View Spelling Bee.  We want to recognize and congratulate all of the students who participated in this year’s Spelling Bee Club!  A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Pickett and Mrs. Henderson for supporting our students throughout the first semester, and a special thank you goes out to Mrs. Carrie Clancy and Mrs. June Olsen for dedicating their time and energy to lead our group of young spellers.  You all have made this year’s Spelling Bee Club a memorable experience for our students, thank you! Our individual award winners are:

Second Grade Champion:  Stephen H.
Third Grade Champion: Dawson S.
Fourth Grade Champion:  Toshi E.
Fifth Grade Champions: Sydney D.
School-wide Champion: Dawson S.
School-wide 2nd Place: Ravindu V.
School-wide Honorable Mention: Tyler A.

Finally, on Monday, January 12 at 2 p.m., Canyon View will be hosting our first open house for prospective open enrollment families.  If you know of any families who are interested in learning more about what Canyon View has to offer their children, then please pass this important information along to them.

Have a fun and safe Winter Break and a happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

As we head into the final two weeks of 2015, the classroom teachers are busy completing various formative and benchmark assessments in the areas of literacy and mathematics.  The data collected will be used to gauge the effectiveness of our instruction, interventions and extensions up to this point in the school year, and we will also be using the data to guide our academic planning and instruction as we charge into the second semester.  Assessment plays an important role at Canyon View and throughout CFSD, and we are deeply committed to making data-driven decisions to continually support the needs of each and every one of our students in order to prepare them for college and career pathways.

Next, Friday December 11th marks the end of our annual Adopt-A-Family project, which has been led by Canyon View’s Student Advisory Board (SAB).  Last week, you received a sign-up list from your child’s homeroom teacher indicating the wish list items that are being requested by their adopted family.  All wish list items are to be sent to school by Friday, December 11th so that the final inventory can be completed.  On Tuesday, December 15th, each grade level will bring their box of donations to awaiting delivery trucks that will transport the goods to the families in need. These grateful parents will then be able to wrap the gifts for their children just in time for the holiday.

On Friday, December 18th at 8:15AM, we will conclude our character-building project by having a special presentation during our quarterly Spirit Assembly. Thom Melendez, the marketing and outreach director from CODAC, will be in attendance to share with our children the impact that their generosity has made in the lives of the adopted families.

At Canyon View, we are deeply committed to teaching our students the meaning and value of the Six Pillars of Character, and the Adopt-A-Family Project is a great way to instill these important traits in our children.  We sincerely appreciate your support of this important project.  Parents and family members are invited to join in our Spirit Assembly celebration on December 18th, and we hope to see you there!

Finally, as mentioned in the September 11th edition of Canyon Views, CFSD was selected as a finalist for the P21: Partnership for 21st Century Learning - Exemplar Program Award.  This week, P21 has named Catalina Foothills School District an exemplar school district, as part of their nationwide program that identifies models of exemplary educational practices that are preparing students for success in the United States.

CFSD was one of three school districts from across the United States selected for this honor.  In addition, sixteen individual schools were named as exemplar schools.

P21 cited CFSD as a district that has “successfully transformed student learning through innovative and transformation practices that include collaborative teaching and learning, distributed leadership, student voice and choice, engaged community partnerships, a climate of achievement, and evidence-based practices.”

When we look at the bigger picture, we know that our successes are the result of everyone working together, from highly committed educators to supportive parents and voters. CFSD has a remarkable community that works to support the learning experiences and opportunities we provide for our students.

To recognize Catalina Foothills as a P21 Exemplar, a written case study will be developed in the spring and featured on the P21 website,  http://www.p21.org/Exemplars, as well as social media and print channels. Our Exemplar Designation is specific for the 2015-2016 school year and we will display the exemplar badge on our websites.

P21 has let us know that they plan to recognize and celebrate the excellent work that CFSD has accomplished. We will keep our community tuned in on those future opportunities.

On behalf of the entire Canyon View Elementary staff, I want to thank each and every one of our families for your continued support of our school and district!

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman
Principal

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

NEW FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Dear Canyon View Families,
The health office is very low on the children's replacement clothing
for the unforeseen accidents that can occur during the school day. We
could use boys and girls pants and shorts in the smaller sizes (think
kinder, first and second grade) Anything that could be donated would
be really helpful. Also, if your child comes home in any replacement
clothing, please return the laundered item  to the school as soon as
you can so that it can go back into our rotation as quickly as
possible.

Az Tax Credit

Arizona Tax Credit in the Foothills

The Catalina Foothills School District is a wonderful school community! It is impressive to see a community with such a commitment to educational excellence and support of the schools here in the Foothills.  CFSD would not be the district it is today without the community that surrounds and supports it! The success of our schools' extracurricular programs is tied to the generous contributions of community members who divert some of their state tax funds to the CFSD programs of their choice!

How does it Work?
Any Arizona taxpayer has the opportunity to give to Catalina Foothills School District instead of paying it in taxes. The donation must be earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based, extracurricular activities. We'll send the donor a receipt for their records. Then, when the taxpayer fills out their 2015 Arizona state taxes, they can subtract the amount of the donation, up to $400 (joint filers) and $200 (individuals), from what is owed in state taxes.  This is not just a tax deduction…it is a tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed to the state, dollar-for-dollar.  For more information about how this credit will work for your individual tax situation, contact your tax advisor.

How are these Dollars Spent?
Tax Credit dollars are spent to support fee-based, extra-curricular offerings. However, regular communication between Mr. Henikman and Community Schools, leads to a beneficial partnerships that also helps support the needs at Canyon View, as dollars are spent to serve a joint purpose.

What is the Tax Credit Goal at Canyon View?
We are aiming for $30,000…that is only 150 individuals at $200 each!

Where Can I Donate?
You can donate online (http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx) with your credit card or fill out the 2015 Tax Credit Form, which can be mailed to Murphey Administration Center, 2101 E River Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85718 or dropped off in person at any CFSD school, by December 31, 2015. Please make checks payable to Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) and note the program to which you'd like to contribute on the check.

What have we purchased at Canyon View with tax credit dollars?

Here are some of the joint projects that Community Schools and past Canyon View principals have completed/purchased within the last 5 years, as well as projects underway or yet to come with Mr. Henikman:
