Box Top Challenge

                               Box Top Challenge is On!!!

From now through March 13, there is a classroom box top challenge
to see which class will be able to bring in the greatest number of
boxtops (and therefore the most money for Canyon View!)  Box tops can
be brought to classroom teachers or to the box in the main office.
Make sure bags are labelled with teacher's name.

Each box top is worth 10 cents.  If every student brought in just 10
box tops that would be more than $400- at no cost to us!  If each
student brough 30 box tops we would earn more than ONE THOUSAND
DOLLARS in free money! The winning class will win an Eegee's party!
So let's start clipping!!!

CogAT Testing

Spring Administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test

In accordance with state requirements, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is offered at different times during the year.  The spring administration is for Grades K-1 only.  Testing will be offered in August for Grade 2, so students currently in Grade 1 may choose to wait.

The testing, which is done before school at 7:15 in the IDS room (Canyon View- 4th grade pod), takes two sessions to complete. Students must attend both sessions.

Requests for testing must be made in writing by Thursday March 12, 2015.  Forms are available in the school office or by email from me.

It is recommended that parents of primary students consult with the classroom teacher and/or gifted specialist before requesting testing. Test results for such young students are valid for a short time only and are NOT required for the identification of primary students for differentiated instruction or extended groups in reading and math in first or second grades.  The assessments used to identify students for these groups are given to all children at the beginning and throughout the year as a regular part of the educational program.

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

The last two weeks have certainly been eventful here at Canyon View as we wrapped up our annual science fair, our third grade students finished creating their South American rainforest masks with artist-in-resident Kate Hodges, our final Kindergarten Show & Tell was a smashing success, and our spring Book Fair has come to an end.  I want to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who committed their time to assist with these events.  We could not have done it without each of you!

With that being said, with the completion of one event or program the start of a new round of enrichment opportunities for our students is just around the corner.  Please be sure to visit the CV blog to stay up-to-date with all the happenings around campus, and we encourage each of you to look for ways to become involved!  Our students will directly benefit from any amount of time you can commit to supporting our school, and we appreciate and need your support!

Science Fair
This week, Canyon View hosted our annual school-wide science fair.  We had 23 young scientists submit projects this year, which included a class project from each of our kindergarten classes.  Mrs. Gibson’s class investigated which type of balloon stays up the longest; while Mrs. Schatz’s kindergarten students investigated which designs help paper airplanes fly the farthest.

Additionally, each of our 99 fifth graders submitted a science fair project for their own grade level competition.  With a focus on providing our students with more project/problem-based learning experiences, we required all of our fifth graders this year to submit a science fair project that was primarily completed at school.  The inquiry, investigation, problem solving, experimentation and analysis that goes into a science fair project directly supports our vision for learning. The fifth grade teachers and I were quite impressed with the effort and perseverance our students demonstrated throughout this learning experience!

School Registration For Next Year

Today is the deadline for current residents to complete the enrollment process for each of their children who will attend Canyon View next year.  The completed and returned registration forms will determine staffing decisions for the next school year.  If you will not be able to make this deadline, please help us prepare for the 2015-2016 school year by submitting your child’s registration by early next week.  The number of students enrolled determines the number of teachers assigned to teach at Canyon View. Please contact our office at 209-7701 to help you with the registration process if needed.

Open Houses & Tours
We will be hosting our final Open Enrollment Open House on Monday, February 16 at 2:00 PM.  If you know of any families who are interested in learning more about what Canyon View has to offer their children, please pass this important information along to them.  To RSVP for the Open House, or to schedule a small group/individual tour, please call 209-7701.  As a reminder, current Open Enrollment families must reapply each year between December 1st and the end of February.  Open Enrollment applications are available online at  HYPERLINK "http://www.cfsd16.org" www.cfsd16.org.

Have a wonderful weekend!
