Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Families,

With 2015 quickly approaching, we want to congratulate all of our students for the effort they have put into becoming life-long learners this semester.  We also want to thank all of our parents and families for your unwavering commitment to making Canyon View Elementary an enriching place for children.  The first semester has been filled with exciting and engaging units of study, and countless memories have been formed along the way.  The skills and knowledge that students are acquiring, and the relationships that students are forming with their teachers and fellow classmates will last a lifetime, and the best is yet to come!

We want to thank all of our CV families for supporting our Adopt-A-Family Project.  This year, were able to support 17 Tucson families who are in need.  This project was a meaningful way to teach the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship) to our students, and we hope that they see the value in taking on these types of special projects.  With the support from our school community, our collective efforts have made a lasting impact on these families during the holiday season and we could not have done it without all of you.  Thank you!

This past Tuesday, we held our annual Canyon View Spelling Bee.  We want to recognize and congratulate all of the students who participated in this year’s Spelling Bee Club!  A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Priya Gupta for dedicating her time and energy to make this year’s Spelling Bee Club a memorable experience for our students.  Our individual award winners are:

First Grade Champion:         Stephen H.
Second Grade Champion:  Dawson S. (school wide champion)
Third Grade Champion:     Cyrus Z. (school wide runner up)
Fourth Grade Champion:  Carlos U.
Fifth Grade Champions:        Aditi G. and Rohini G.

Finally, on January 12th at 2 p.m., Canyon View will be hosting our first open house for prospective open enrollment families.  If you know of any families who are interested in learning more about what Canyon View has to offer their children, then please pass this important information along to them.

Have a fun and safe Winter Break and a happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Rob Henikman

2014 ARIZONA TAX CREDIT

                                                 2014 ARIZONA TAX CREDIT

"Greetings Canyon View families! The December 31st deadline for making your voluntary 2014 Arizona Tax Credit contribution is rapidly approaching! For more information about making a tax credit contribution, or to donate online, visit our district website at www.cfsd16.org, and click on the 2014 Tax Credit link on our home page. If you plan to mail your contribution, please ensure it is postmarked by the December 31st deadline.

This year Mr. Henikman is working with Community Schools to collect and utilize tax credit dollars at Canyon View to update things on the campus (sound panels and sound system in the MPR, Kindergarten Shade Structure, and more). This improvements will benefit students at Canyon View during the school day, as well as students enrolled in Community Schools extra-curricular programs.

Your contributions and support of our Catalina Foothills School District programs are greatly appreciated and help make projects like this possible! Enjoy the upcoming winter break!"

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

Arizona Tax Credit in the Foothills

The Catalina Foothills School District is a wonderful school community! It is impressive to see a community with such a commitment to educational excellence and support of the schools here in the Foothills.  CFSD would not be the district it is today without the community that surrounds and supports it! The success of our schools' extracurricular programs is tied to the generous contributions of community members who divert some of their state tax funds to the CFSD programs of their choice!

How does it Work?
Any Arizona taxpayer has the opportunity to give to Catalina Foothills School District instead of paying it in taxes. The donation must be earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based, extracurricular activities. We'll send the donor a receipt for their records. Then, when the taxpayer fills out their 2014 Arizona state taxes, they can subtract the amount of the donation, up to $400 (joint filers) and $200 (individuals), from what is owed in state taxes.  This is not just a tax deduction…it is a tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed to the state, dollar-for-dollar.  For more information about how this credit will work for your individual tax situation, contact your tax advisor.

How are these Dollars Spent?
Tax Credit dollars are spent to support fee-based, extra-curricular offerings. However, regular communication between Mr. Henikman and Community Schools, leads to a beneficial partnerships that also helps support the needs at Canyon View, as dollars are spent to serve a joint purpose.

What is the Tax Credit Goal at Canyon View?
We are aiming for $30,000…that is only 150 individuals at $200 each!

Where Can I Donate?
You can donate online ( HYPERLINK "http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx" http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx) with your credit card or fill out the 2014 Tax Credit Form, which can be mailed to Murphey Administration Center, 2101 E River Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85718 or dropped off in person at any CFSD school, by December 31, 2014. Please make checks payable to Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) and note the program to which you'd like to contribute on the check.

What have we purchased at Canyon View with tax credit dollars?

Here are some of the joint projects that Community Schools and past Canyon View principals have completed/purchased within the last 4 years, as well as projects underway or yet to come with Mr. Henikman:

Installation of the shade structure on the Kindergarten playground.
Installation of Sound Panels in the Canyon View MPR
Lego Robotics team registrations and equipment used by CV students and Community Schools
Imagine Learning software purchase used by CV teachers, students, and Community Schools
Soccer Goals used by CV Physical Education and Community Schools
Scooters used by CV Physical Education and Community Schools
30 sets of headphones used by CV students and Community Schools
“Coyote Code” program and school assembly used by CV staff, students and Community Schools

We thank you for your continued support of our school and district programs!

Sincerely,
Rob Henikman

COGAT TESTING

Canyon View Midyear Administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test

In accordance with state requirements, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is offered at different times during the year.  The midyear administration of the CogAt for Canyon View will be on Thursday, January 8, Friday, January 9, and the following Tuesday, January 13, 2015.  Parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who are new to the school or HAVE NOT been tested in the past two years are eligible to test at this time.  Students who are currently receiving gifted services do not retest.

The CogAT is used to identify students for gifted services and is required for students who wish to be considered for Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS). Permission slips are available in the front office.
It is recommended that parents consult with the classroom teacher and/or gifted specialist before requesting testing.

Parents must request testing in writing by January 6th, 2015.   Forms are available in the school office or can be emailed to you by the gifted specialist (Liane Cooper).  The testing, which is done before school at 7:15 in the IDS room, takes 3 sessions to complete. Students must be present for all three days.

Principal's message

Dear Canyon View Families,

October was a very exciting month for us at Canyon View and now it’s on to the second trimester!  We want to thank everyone for attending our annual Canyon Boo celebration and making this special event such an enjoyable experience for our children.  The Halloween Parade on the 31st was another fun event for our students, and it was rewarding to see all of the teachers and parents having just as much fun as our children!  Thank you for everyone who volunteered your time!

Our Science Fair Kick-Off Night is coming up on Wednesday, November 12 at 6PM in the MPR. The number of participants has been steadily increasing each year and we’re anticipating another record turnout. I’m certain that our young scientists will make this year’s Science Fair the best one yet.  The lessons learned when creating a science fair project extend well beyond the classroom, and sometimes an opportunity like this is all that it takes to ignite a child’s passion that will last a lifetime.

Report cards will be sent home on Friday, November 14.  Teachers spend countless hours on these reports ensuring that their comments give parents detailed information regarding your child’s progress.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s report card please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers.

Next, we are pleased to announce that Canyon View will once again participate in the Adopt-A-Family Project.  Last year, our school community positively influenced the lives of over 300 people during the holiday season.  We are deeply committed to this project, and we are looking forward to helping those in need.  Additional information will be sent out to our families in two weeks.

Finally, as we continue to inform our community about the new District Strategic Plan-Envision21: Deep Learning, the component of the plan highlighted in this newsletter is CFSD Strategic Plan-Goal 2, which focuses on self-regulation.  What does a self-regulated learner do differently than others?  What are our goals for students as they learn how to self-regulate?  These are important questions to consider, and below is a list of indicators that is being used to structure our work in this area:
Setting Relevant and Realistic Goal(s):

Utilize strategies to set challenging, achievable goals:

  • Set goals that represent authentic, real world work in response to a genuine need or interest
  • clearly define the scope of the goals and the performance expectations

Systematic and Comprehensive Plan:
Create a plan that:
• Prioritizes steps in the process
• Identifies a reasonable timeline for individual phases of the plan
• Appropriately matches tools and resources to individual phases of the plan
• Anticipates potential obstacles throughout the plan

Self-instruction:

  • Apply strategies to new or different contexts to develop expertise needed to accomplish the task

Resources:

  • Modify existing resources or seek materials from alternative sources; use resources in a novel or innovative manner

Effective and Sustained Effort:

  • Adjust strategies and effort levels appropriately for individual phases of the process
  • Use challenges or obstacles as an opportunity to refine work
  • Accomplish tasks efficiently

Self-monitoring and Reflection:

  • Analyze patterns and prior performances to revise goals and processes.
  • Self-correct throughout the process, modifying goals and work in response to ongoing reflection and feedback

Have a wonderful weekend!

Parking Lot Safety

Dear Parents,

Just a friendly reminder to obey all traffic laws during morning and afternoon drop-off/pick-up.  We need to ensure the safety of our students, their families and others on the road.  Specifically, making u-turns in the middle of the road to turn into the CV parking lot only creates a dangerous situation for everyone on the road.  Thank you for keeping our families safe.

Power Restored

Canyon View power is back on 11/6/14 @ 11:30am.

Canyon View Power Currently Down 11/6/14 11:22AM

Canyon View Parents,

Currently, Canyon View is experiencing a power outage.  We currently still have phone and internet service, however we were informed that these services could go down as well.  TEP is working on a solution, and expects the power will be up within the hour.  If you call the school and do not receive an answer, then it's probably due to the phone service going down.  The kids are safe, and it's business as usual here at school.  We will notify our families when the power is up and running again.

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

Rob Henikman

Principal's message

Dear Canyon View Families,

Conference week is behind us and I hope that your conversations with your children’s teachers were informative.  Conference week is a valuable time for us each year as it is a way to coordinate our collective efforts to help educate our children and support the work that is taking place at school and at home.  As we all can agree, learning doesn’t stop when our children leave school, and we are committed to strengthening the school-home partnership.

In an effort to ensure that parent-teacher conferences are meeting the needs of everyone involved, we are asking parents to give us some feedback by completing a short survey.  Please use the link below to complete the survey.  If you have multiple children who attend Canyon View, we would appreciate it if you completed a separate survey for each child.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NYN97KM

Over the next two weeks, we have three exciting events happening around campus beginning with tonight’s Canyon Boo!  This long-standing tradition kicks off at 6:00 p.m. and includes several fun and engaging activities ranging from trick-or-treating (6-8 p.m.), the Sonora Desert Museum's Spooky Animal Exhibit, and Mad Science.  We’ll see you there!

Next, on October 31st we will be having our annual Halloween Parade out on the North Field.  We will be starting the festivities promptly after morning announcements and students who are planning on dressing up should arrive at school dressed in their costumes.   When selecting a costume for your child/children, please be sure that it is appropriate for school.  Children are not permitted to wear face paint, bring dangerous items, or items that represent weapons or could be used in a way that could cause injury to other participants.  After our parade has concluded, all students will be expected to change back into their regular school attire.  We appreciate your support!

Finally, on November 12th we will be hosting CV’s Science Fair Kick-Off Night from 6-7 p.m. in the MPR.  This informational session will give students and parents insight regarding the scientific process and what it takes to create a quality science fair project.  Students who participate in this project-based learning will experience first-hand the excitement and sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a science experiment from start to finish, regardless of the end result.  Project-based learning is an effective way to spark students’ natural sense of curiosity, and the impact could last a lifetime!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Principal's Message

Dear Canyon View Parents,

As we continue to inform our community about the new District Strategic Plan-Envision21: Deep Learning, the component of the plan highlighted in this newsletter is CFSD Strategic Plan-Goal 2, which focuses on citizenship.

Developing responsible citizens has been a longstanding priority for schools around the world.  At Canyon View, our core values center around the Six Pillars of Character where we teach our students to consistently demonstrate trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Citizenship takes on many forms.  It is our commitment to extend citizenship beyond the classroom and local community to include a more global perspective and prepare our children to deal with the challenges of today’s increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.

We will help develop global citizens by:

  • Encouraging our children to analyze real-life issues critically and to identify possible solutions creatively and innovatively.
  • Teaching our children to examine the roots and causes of events and developments at the local level, consider the connections with the global level, and identify possible solutions.
  • Support learners to revisit assumptions, worldviews, and learn about various cultures and their global perspectives.
  • Focus on engagement in individual and collective action to bring about desired changes.
  • Involve multiple stakeholders, including those outside the learning environment, in the community and in wider society.

As a school, and as a district, we feel it is important to reach learners in the early stages of their social and affective development. Our children play a particularly important role in global citizenship education, and they need to be acknowledged and supported not only as learners, but also as educators, advocates and leaders.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Rob Henikman
Principal
